Why did you choose photography as your medium?
Har Kwan Luk: I think the most interesting thing about photography is that it’s the one art form where you don’t have to be an artist to do it. It’s more like, you have to be an artist and then you have to be a technician. So being interested in both sides of that, I always tried to bridge both sides with my work. We all have these stories inside of us that are waiting to be told and be shared, whether it’s with a poem or a painting or a sculpture or a piece of music, or a photograph. So I’ve always been interested in exploring the way that we convey these stories to other people through words and images.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Har Kwan Luk: I think that one of the more challenging aspects of my job is the fact that I travel around a lot and spend a lot of time in the wilderness. Because in some ways, you have to be prepared to lose a lot of your things, like your photo gear and stuff. But at the same time, that’s also something that I really enjoy. Because I love exploring the natural world and hiking and climbing and everything, taking my camera outside with me and spending time in nature. But at the same time, I also spend a lot of time in hotels and on planes and stuff. So it’s this little bit of a dichotomy there. When I’m hiking and climbing and taking pictures, I don’t want to be thinking about my camera and how to bring it with me. I want to be focused on my experience. But at the same time, I also want to bring my camera with me to capture that experience.
Advice for those who are considering photography as a career
Har Kwan Luk: The best advice I could give is to just do it. There’s no good reason why you can’t just pick up an old camera and start taking pictures.
